Master Steel designed and fabricated the stabilisation beam for the Nerang River Crossing Project. A drill rig stabiliser holds the BHA or bottom hole assembly in the borehole to prevent sidetracking and vibrations. Our beam arrangement transmitted the load from the drill rig to the pipe casing. This required CPEng and RPEQ sign-off for the engineering.
The Nerang River Crossing Project is one of the largest horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crossings in the country. It required the directional drilling of a 1.2-metre diameter pipe under the Nerang River. The borehole ran for a total of 900 metres from the entry points at Winchester Street in Southport and Waterways Drive in Main Beach. The project started in November 2018 and was completed in May 2020 by Dunstans Construction Group. The $10 million project forms part of the Gold Coast City Council’s Long Term Recycled Water Release Plan, which aims to address the city’s excess recycled water.
